SSCS 2015 was another success with parcels winging their way from Australia to many parts of the world and parcels flying back here. It is a wonderful way for bloggers overseas to learn more about Australia, and of course the reverse is true.

This year I sent to Diane, The Cheshire Quilter in the UK. I had a lot of fun stalking, reading about her craft groups, renovations, anticipation of new life and more. I couldn't comment because that may have given the game away.
This is what I sent.

A shopping bag that folds up. Where Diane lives is getting rid of plastic bags. A very sensible place, if you ask me!!!!

Uta picked two designers I admire greatly.
This little sewing bag was on my one day list. It is from Anni Downs' Some Kind of Wonderful book. Uta, it will be well used!

This is a Gail Pan needle book. Beautifully stitched. Can you see the beaded dragonfly in the packet? I think I will attach it to one of my scissors. Chocolate Santa didn't last long.

Thank you very much, Uta.

Our Christmas was a quiet one this year, just my parents, hubby and me. Our son was with his partner's family for the first time, as it should be.
Next year will be more crowded table with a grandchild expected in March. Something to look forward too.

Take care,
Unfortunately I had to leave early for a family function north of where I live, so a fair bit of time was wasted in the car.
Still the time I had with the Stitchers was great.... a lovely bunch of ladies....just wish I could have stayed until the end.
First of all, we can't forget the December birthday girls. Here they are carefully (or should that be painfully) opening each present together.

We swap presents. We got our 'name' early this year, but I still managed to be sewing it right down to the wire. I am not a model for organisation. As per usual, the presents were well thought out and very well made. There is a lot of pressure when you know the standard of the work of the recipient. :-)

The food table always groans under the volume and deliciousness of the food. Not a time for diets.
I received from Maree...a pocketed mat for under my machine...filled with extra goodies...and lollies and biscuits and a diary. This mat will be very handy. I have been thinking of making one as I sewed my secret sewing lately. My tools kept dropping off. Now I'll have easy-to-get-to pockets for them.
I gave to Deb a block holder. The embroided centre is a Rosalie Quinlan/Dekker design. I used Lynette Anderson fabric as I know Deb loves her work. I believe it will be well used as Deb has another special project underway.
It's been exciting though...lots of stalking to work out if what I wanted to make would suit my recipient.
It has been posted and recieved.
But all I can reveal is what Santa dropped off at my place.
This beautiful ornament is now on our tree.

I know this year has been a busy one for the organiser of our international Secret Santa Christmas Swap 2015 - Chookyblue. I believe Jannimary has been the supporting elf this year. So to both ladies a very big Thank You for getting it up and running again this year!

Take care,
This year we set the date aside and other things were missed instead.
Some of the houses/buildings need to be booked. They may have size/numbers/parking restrictions. We were late organising our itinerary so next year we will be quicker to book some of these.
Can't complain though as we had a very entertaining day in the city and we saw lots more than we thought. In fact - 3 churches, 1 water reservoir, the base of the old windmill (need to book to go up top), the Grand Masonic Lodge, the General Post Office and the new ABC building.
After which my feet and stomach gave out and we ended up at Ole in Southbank with a pitcher of sangria and tapas.
The news floor of the ABC building. We met people from the radio and television sections, heard how programs and the news are put together and broadcast. We went inside the TV news studio where we saw 'weathergirl' Jenny Woodward's green screen and learnt how it worked.
In all, it was an interesting day.
Take care,
Recently, I did a major wardrobe cull as I've lost a bit of weight. Very happy to have lost the weight (and determined to keep it off now) but disappointed to pass on a few items as I really liked them. Still someone else will get better use out of them.
Not a good day for photos.
A bit lairy, I know, but the 2 on the left will be house clothes.
I tried the patterns out in cheap rayon from East Coast Fabric before I cut into the cotton/linen blends I also got from East Coast. The skirt is in a stretch woven something or other. East Coast are not good on labels. Experienced sewers like my mother would be able to rattle it off easily.
It was then time to turn my attention to another much anticipated event - The 2015 Bathurst Bloggers Meet.
I really enjoy meeting this group of ladies....in the picturesque Perthville...in comfortable accommodation....very well fed by Vicki and her offsider.....shopping in Anni Downs' Home Patch store.
Unfortunately, my body decided that now the stress of the previous weeks had gone and it could let a cold take hold. I was feeling good until the plane flight. I don't think the pressure on my ears and sinuses helped.
I really really hope I did not pass it on to anyone. I was trying to be careful.
I was very annoyed with myself as I was looking forward to walking with Fiona and talking. Talking is big part of this weekend, naturally. These days when I get a cold I seem to get it in the voice. It is hard to have wonderful conversation when body wants to cough and gag.

Set up time...grab your spot.

Dinner Saturday night is "Make It, Bake It or Fake It" swap time. I might add the girls were offering to trace their feet if they could get a pair of socks from Georgina like the lucky Fiona received.
There were a lot of other high achievers there too.
Me...I was just happy to sit in my corner and take it all in.

Thank you to everyone who was there!
I've written it in my head and I really thought I had published it. I'm still going to do it as I want to keep on record this year's retreat.

Same venue -Glenrose Patchwork B&Bs at Warwick - why change perfection.
Same week - end of June/start of July.
Same people - well almost - One was unable to come, but we made sure she was there in spirit and didn't miss out.
Same lack of photos - the others do it so much better.

The photos will tell the story.
Sorry Lynda, Alison and Maree. Your work for the week was also fabulous just not recorded properly by this slack photographer.
I didn't think I would be able to go next year as 2016 is a very significant birthday for me and I want to celebrate it with hubby and parents. But! It's a leap year so it moves the the end of the week. I might just be able to go still. Insert smiley face here.

Take care,
On the eve of his birthday in July, he gave us a present....a three and half year old granddaughter!
I won't go into all the details here. Let's just say it was a bit of a shock.
Miss C comes with a 15 month old brother, who, although not ours biologically, we will also regard as our grandchild.
We got to meet them recently when they came for a few days with their mum. I think all were nervous at first, but by the end we had relaxed. I loved playing with them. I had shopped for toys, books and games. So it was bubbles and stories and watering the garden and kickball all round.
Out of respect to mum's wishes, I won't be showing their faces. I will be altering my profile so show grandmother status and this post is to explain that sudden change.
I've already 'knocked the socks' off some friends.
We hope to be able to continue to have a relationship with them and enjoy watching them grow up.
I took up this quilting hobby quite awhile ago. It seems like everyone else has a quilt and not my darling husband. I have finally remedied that. Here is his Twister quilt.

I gave it to him, then took it straight back. I felt a bit mean, but it is also my entry for display in the Queensland Quilters show this October.
It was made with a layer cake of 'Comma' by Zen Chic for Moda and I used the largest Twister ruler, by CS Designs.

But look what he made me!

I've always liked the quirky Adirondack chairs. Can't decide if it's going in the garden or on the patio.
I've since found out there is a matching footstool. If anyone knows where to get that pattern/plan, let me know. DH T has said he would make one.

I think we both got something we liked.

Take care,
I finished and gave away the quilt for my youngest brother-in-law. I could kick myself as I didn't get a photo of him with it.
Still more blogging to catch up on, but that is enough for tonight.

I enjoy our monthly Sunday Stitchers meetings very much. Our other members are far better bloggers than I am. They report on our meetings more thoroughly and regularly than I do.
Having said that... I was the birthday girl in June and the lucky recipient of all these FQs.
Thank you, ladies.

(For them - to explain the request for red and white)
This is the first book I bought when I started my patchwork <strike>obsession</strike> hobby. As soon as I saw this quilt, it went on my 'to do one day' list. Maybe now I have all these new FQs, it will come off the 'one day' list.

Our recent swap was a mini. This is the one I made for Teresa. It's called the housewife block and I made it using Paris Flea Market fabric.

The fabric range contains a stylised map of Paris. I had to use it as Teresa is very much a Francophile.
Here are the ones swapped on the day. We are holding the ones we received. Mine came from Susan.
Another thing I had not seen until our stay on North Stradbroke Island was a school of bait fish. I've seen reports on the evening news but not in person.
We watched the sea birds feasting on the bait fish for ages.
The black patch in the water is the fish.
I probably always will be, but I know I'm not alone in struggling to keep up-to-date with my blog.
So, what about Straddie..... Last year, DH and I spent Easter on the Fraser Coast where we went for a day trip to Fraser Island - the largest sand island in the world.
Back home in Brisbane, we realised we have neglected the two very large sand islands just off our own city - Moreton and Stradbroke Islands. Neither of us has been to Moreton and we will get there one day. I've been to Straddie in my early teens but only for just one day.
So a three day weekend getaway was proposed. We'll ignore the fact that this weekend was in May and that I'm very late blogging about it.
There is no bridge and that, I think is a good thing. It means a trip on the car ferry. We were first there for our time slot. We weren't just keen, we didn't want to miss it.
That little, when compared to the trucks, green car top right is ours. There is a lot of sand mining on the island and the trucks belong to that industry. The sand mining is a controversial issue.
One very high highlight was seeing a pair of dugong (probably mum and bub) grazing very close to shore. According to the locals, this was a very rare sight. None of the photos in the above sequence are zoomed. The first one shows the little groyne they were in, eating sea grasses (the dark patch in the water). In the other 3, you can just make out the dugong coming up for air. Seeing them was a first for me.
I'm sitting at our monthly bloggers meet - Sunday Stitchers. I am so far behind in my blogging (I blame Instagram) that I thought today before sewing I was in the perfect place to do a blog post.

The housework, I'm pleased to say, is being neglected in favour of another special birthday quilt.
I'm making this one, but won't say who for just yet.
It uses a jelly roll and the central part came together quickly. I had a bit of a search for the peeper, border and backing, but that's sorted now.
I have to have this one quilted and delivered very soon. I have several tops to quilt, so what am I doing? Yes, Dawnie, Anni Downs' In My Garden is down off the shelf! I needed hand work.

One of my local group's days out was to St Paul's quilt show in Ipswich. These 2 photos show only a small part of the quilts on show. It was a bit of a wet day (read - the start of the latest bout of flooding), but it was a good day out. Not only a quilt show, but an art show and a lovely lunch on the verandah of the historic manse. We also went out to the Queensland Quilters annual picnic in May; this year held at Rosewood. No photos = slack blogger. We also checked out a members new home at the coast as well as visit to a nearby shop.
I'm in a secret mini swap. This is all I can show as the recipient is sitting very close.
I want to use one of the tools I have been accumulating. It's a Creative Grids strip ruler to make half square triangles. I think I have to practise a bit more. I'm left handed so I have to work out the best way for me to approach it.
There are interesting conversations going on about me that I want to join in. Also it is the Biggest Morning Tea meet for the Cancer Council fundraiser so that means yummier food than usual to eat.
So people, I'm off.
The colours are a bit richer in real life. The camera flash takes a bit of the colour depth out.
Recently, after I made my BIL's quilt, I counted up how many I've made and what was to come this year. It's a very big year for significant birthdays. I said the total and he said "you mean I'm not going to be number...." Oh, the guilt trip!
I have made a big one for our bed, but I suppose that was an 'us' one not a 'him' one.
It is partly his own fault. Over time he has liked a quilt pattern for which I duly collected the fabric only to change his mind THREE times.
The guilts won out over Easter.
He now has a finished top at least. I do intend to quilt it by the beginning of August as I want to have an entry in the Queensland Quilters Quilt Show.
So he can stop looking neglected!

I used a Comma layer cake by Zen Chic and the large Twister ruler, holding my breathe every time I made a cut.

I used the leftover pieces from cutting out the blocks to make the scrappy inner border.

Then I repeated the black and white script fabric as an outer border.
He's happy!
I'm glad!

What I'm not so happy about is my effort at a Sew Together bag. It came very close to the bin several times.

My sewing is terrible and it really has rocked my confidence. I've been saying to myself that it was going to be an orphan all the way through making it. I don't like how it looks, but, more so, I don't like how it 'beat' me up. I have the pattern for the Bionic bag. I might just have a go at it and try for a better looking finished product, one that will be allowed out of the house.
I'm just jealous at all the fabulous ones I've seen in person, on blogs and IG.
I will get over it and stop obsessing, another thing my darling says to me.

Take care, everyone.
One project that started last October and was worked around a friend's travels was this quilt.

The person in the middle is Dianne and this year she celebrated her 60th birthday. It was her travels we worked around to ensure we weren't found out. Our kitchen table group made this Arkansas Crossroads quilt, using a Hoffman jelly roll (Kiwiberry or something like that) and a creamy beige batik for the background.
I will get a better photo of the whole quilt when she comes to visit next week. After our early start on this project, it ended up a rush at the end. When it was finished, I had hubby on loose thread checking, then it was wrapped and delivered. Totally forgetting to photograph the entire quilt.
It turned out beautiful. We finished it with a border that makes it look like it floats.
There were several people hoping she wouldn't like it as they wanted to claim it, including me and hubby!

Take care,
I was really stressing out about this swap. Nothing was coming to mind. Normally our swaps are not one on one, but our fearless leader, Maree, set it up that way this time. Of course we were all clueless. Maria and I were paired. Maria and I also go to Sisters of Stitch at our library. So the funniest part was, we both thought to ourselves we can't work on it there as our swap partner would see it. We just didn't know both of us were thinking the same thing! I even rejoined Pinterest so I could stalk and repin her Easter pins. My Pinterest page was of no help to her as they were all her pins anyway!
Eventually, I thought of something. A major search of my books, patterns and even bits torn for old magazines yield my bunny from an elderly colouring-in book. I think he's cute. I did use satin stitch in parts. I held my tongue the right way and it turned out acceptable. So I was very pleased.
These ladies are all very talented and it was fun to see what they came up with.
What I didn't get good photos of was our raffle in aid of our May's Biggest Morning tea. Check out Maria's blog as she won it!
Thanks (big thanks) and congratulations have to be given to Helen for making, donating and putting it together. It started to look like Aladdin's cave as Maria opened it. We all ended up wishing we had won it!
The next swap is a 12 inch mini. Better put that thinking cap back on.

Take care, everyone.
This year, there were 3 in my car. Susan and Lynda and I had a great run down to Nundle. Unbelievably there were no roadworks, first time ever.
We meet up with another Queensland car load (De, Marilyn and Teresa) at the Warwick Garden Centre for breakfast on the road. Delicious, if anyone is going that way.
Kate received my gift. I think I mentioned this and showed a sneak peak ages ago. It is an A4 project bag with a clear window to show the contents. Our Tuesday kitchen table group had a machine sewing day learning how to sew these. Very practical.
This is what I received from our very own Teresa...a mug rug, mug and a needlebook. All of which will be well used. The needle book is a clever pattern by Lori Holt and I remember admiring it on Teresa's IG. So lucky me is now the proud owner. Thank you Teresa!
Lynette Anderson was our guest tutor again. The (pinched) photo above shows all the finished projects from the 2014 workshop. I think this was the biggest group of finishes ever in the life of GDITC. Not everyone stuck to the pattern exactly. There were many interesting variations; some not even bags. Lynette looked impressed!
I may not have done the hexagons on the bottom, too time poor, but I did finish it in time to take it to show.
A lot of people proudly showed off all manner of items made using Lynette's patterns.

The Saturday night barbecue and Show And Tell was very windy. The girls had to hang on tightly to those quilts. I don't think anyone want to scale the nearby trees to rescue them.
The trip home was a lot quieter than the one down. All talked out!
Anni Downs will be the tutor next year. I have one and a half quilt tops, another in the planning and heaps of her patterns. I'm going to try really hard to have lots to show her next year.

Thanks everyone for a wonderful weekend.
I have since bought better clamps. Unfortunately the ones in the photo were too shallow to hold on to the table tightly. DH will get these for his workroom, so he's not complaining.
The quilt being pinned has been delivered to the birthday boy. I think he likes it. My SIL does, as it matches her lounge room. LOL.

I am pleased with how I have been getting through my heavy list of must-dos for this year. Everything is on schedule. Actually that is bit of a surprise to me. Just goes to show, I can achieve things if I focus.
There were <strike> 2</strike> 3 things on my 'if I have time' list. Two I have not achieved - the Queensland Quilters Challenge and last year's bag from GDITC. They were only hopes, so I'm not disappointed and the second one will get there one day anyway. The third was a go at an entry for the 'Lest We Forget' challenge for the Australian Quilt Convention. I thought I had missed it but I got an email saying the deadline had been put back a week.
Now I know I am not an arty quilter! I have submitted my entry form and will be very surprised if I get asked to send it down. It was just something I really wanted to have a go at. More time and a bit more care would have made a better effort. There was no time for unpicking or finding a better/correct printer. I figure the photos won't fade for a couple of years.
I used copies of the photos my Grandparents swapped when Grandad went off to WW1 and two of the postcards he sent back. I tried to mimic his handwriting and the greetings he used on the cards.
I was a tail end grandchild and therefore knew only the old man. These postcards give an insight to the 20 year who love his girlfriend (later wife).
I definitely have a connection to this!
The Queensland Theatre Company's next play is 'Brisbane'. It will be on at QPAC from April 11th to May 3rd.
The connection? It was written by my cousin, Matthew Ryan!
The play is about 14 year old Danny Fisher and is set in wartime Brisbane 1942. It uses true stories to tell his tale.
His mum (my cousin) has just organised tickets for my parents. Dad is Matthew's great-uncle and although the play is not about him, he was also a young boy in Brisbane at the same time, sharing similar experiences.
Mum, Dad and I have been to one of Matthew's previous production, Summer Wonderland. We thoroughly enjoyed that one. If it is ever on near you, see it.

This is the link to the new play. I had better not try to steal a photo. I do have a photo of an 11 year old Matthew, but I don't think he'd appreciate that one.

Take care,
Enjoy the Arts,
I joined Instagram and find it a very quick and easy tool to use. Sorry Chooky, the dark side, I know.
I have been very busy since January.
Back to School week and the first few weeks of school have been busy at my little job. We welcomed 2 years worth of students to high school this year as the Year Sevens joined us for the first time. Fitting them out in uniforms and getting their books organised made for some very long and tiring days.
There were some very worried faces on our newbies. I feel part of my job is to make them feel better about coming to our school. We are a very big school and some of the new students have come to us from very small primary schools. I'm an old girl of the school where I work and volunteer. Once a Vice-Captain always one, I suppose.
I describe my job as little. Unfortunately it is getting even 'littler', as the P&C Association want to save money, so I'm down to one day. Pity, as I do like it and it pays for my hobby addictions.
On the craft front, I have been busy also.
This year is full of special birthdays, so I have been planning and sewing.

This one's going to someone special. I bought 2 extra plastic tables from Bunnings to use with our existing table. I am no longer going to pin quilts by kneeling on the floor. Just too hard at my age. This quilt top will be my first go at pinning on my new tables. Hope it is a lot easier!
I thought this baby quilt was all finished bar the label. I found more ends to tidy when I unfolded it for the photo. Tonight's job.
There has also been some secret sewing, to be revealed later.
Not much else has been going on here. Too darn hot! I only felt like getting back into my garden this week. With the heat and lovely rain it is a bit overgrown. Bring on autumn, my favourite season.

Take care, everyone,
